Schools feedback – Supriya Nagarajan Raga workshops, Cumbria

Supriya spent two days with Highlights, across May and June giving Raga workshops and talking about her work and Indian classical music, with children at Crosby Ravensworth CE Primary School, Appleby Primary School, Arnside National School, Storth CE Primary School and at two Secondary schools – Dallam School, in South Lakes and at Ullswater Community College in Penrith, where she had an audience of 280 students.

Here are some photos from the workshops and feedback from Heads and teachers –

“To allow mainly Year 8s experience hearing a live Indian classical musician perform a variety of Ragas which they had been composing in curriculum music lessons.”

  • “Children learned about some of the Culture, Geography and Art in India.”

“The singing / chanting was fun. It was also just nice to meet and have a Q & A with someone from another cultural background.”

  • “The quality and tranquil and calming nature of the music performed and also understanding the social context of why the music is performed in the way that it was.” Music Teacher, UCC

“It was great for the students to hear the use of microtones, improvisation and the real life application of Rags in a performance context.”

“Thank you for being very [flexible] and facilitating what we needed – it was a fab experience for both the teachers and the students.”

Students said..

“I loved hearing a musician from another part of the world. It opened my eyes to music from India that is different but completely as valuable as what we hear.”
