Standing In Line is the story of the Great War, but specifically about Albert Scrimshaw, Lester Simpson’s great uncle, who died at Passchendaele. Originally commissioned by ‘Peace Concerts Passchendaele’ it was premiered in Passchendaele Church, Belgium. The performance is centred around Lester’s songs as well as songs from the time. The narration includes poems of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rudyard Kipling and is accompanied by a series of projected images for a moving, immersive experience.

Albert Scrimshaw was born in 1885 in Eastwell, Leicestershire. He worked as a butler near Oxford and married a girl from Windley, Derbyshire. He joined the ”Ox and Bucks” regiment and marched off to war, never to return. His widow Annie lived in Duffield, Derbyshire until her death in the 1970’s.

Lester Simson is an English folk singer, and previously performed with Coope, Boyes & Simpson.
